Created as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and found in Internal Revenue Code Section 179D this deduction allows for a federal tax deduction of up to $1.80 per square foot for any newly constructed or retrofitted commercial building, which meets energy efficiency targets. For qualifying government owned buildings the deduction can be claimed by the lead designer of the property.
